Even More Basics

Sometimes it’s hard to remove yourself from the warm, coziness of your bed in the morning. While usually a time crunch that’s brought on by my attachment to a nice mattress + comforter leads to a less carefully crafted outfit for me, apparently nothing cancels out that occurrence quite like running low on wearable clothes. Procrastinating on life and laundry has never treated me better.

The Basics

I’m not really one for playing around with basic pieces. I don’t own any white t-shirts and I generally prefer things with an extra flair to them (more bang for my styling buck), which is why when I head back to basics, I think more about playing with basic formulas and methods for styling.

It can be a little intimidating when you’re thinking up what you should wear and you’re looking through every single item in your closet. Should you hit the world up with a snazzy sparkly skirt? Make it a little fancy with a printed collared shirt? I recommend thinking of a simple combo and then filling in the blanks: Sweater + Jeans + Socks + Boots. From there, you hit that magical point where you’re restricting yourself to specific types of pieces, while still leaving room for your creativity to shine through. So style it up, keep it classy, and go bold while also heading back to the basics!

Pointless Sweater

I have a love of sweaters that runs so great that I don’t even have a need for them to be functional anymore. This sweater does nothing to keep me warm in this emerging winter cold and I decided to continue the trend of non-winter-functional pieces by layering it over top of this pastel, floral sleeveless button-down. I’m on this new kick of pulling my summer pieced into winter wear because I like a challenge (read: my wardrobe is not as expansive as I wish it was). Don’t limit your clothes to the season friends. Mix and match to your heart’s content. Live your dreams.

Yeti Chic

I recently have been intensely perusing the web in search of a nice pair of camel colored suede ankle booties, which unfortunately has not resulted with a purchase of that item. In fact, it resulted in me purchasing this lovely sweater from Forever 21 that, despite being quite thin, is very warm and cozy. I have worn it twice since it came in the mail and both times I had to stop and think about how much like a yeti I felt. At first, I was afraid that this new more animalistic side of me may compromise the rest of my outfit, but when it comes to my yeti lifestyle, I have realized that I am a classy yeti. I groom my fur, wash it with luxury shampoo, and then sit back in my icy cave for a cup of tea and some Hulu. I am the classiest, fashion loving yeti on the mountain.

Winter Florals

I don’t want to believe that I’m on a floral print kick, but I think I might be on a floral print kick. Luckily, I only own about 4 or 5 articles of clothing that are decked out in beautiful flowers, but my floral print backpack that I need to use for class might turn up as the factor that’s holding me back. It does add a nice contrast to poor weather, though. No matter how much bleak and chilly it is outside, I will always have a little piece of sunny spring day with me everywhere I go. It really can’t get better than that.

Wild Flower

I generally tend to stray from the adventurous when it comes to mixing prints. To be more specific, I usually just don’t mix prints at all because I am afraid that I will go outside 5 minutes before I am meant to be at school or work and will realize that I have made a  dire mistake. In fact, the only time I typically do mix prints is when I wake up in the morning and realize that I just don’t care. This was one of those days and I am quite pleased with the results.

Balancing Acts

I’ve spent the greater part of the past 3 days indoors marathon watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I like to think mastered the art of dressing cozy enough to be completely comfortable as I lay on my bed bundled up in blankets, yet still respectable enough to go out into public without giving off the vibes that I’ve watched 2 movies and 26+ of one anime’s franchise. For the most part, achieving the right balance of various elements is all I’m really expecting at this point when I get dressed in the morning. Whether that balance comes from finding a way to blend together a love for an anime series with the need to go outside and be an upstanding citizen or from blending together a preppy plaids and cardigans with somewhat edgy t-shirts and bags, we must always remember that balance is key. Or perhaps I’m just beginning to take myself a little too seriously.
